Fundamental tips on how to write an essay
Writing an essay can be tough. It’s hard enough thinking of a topic, not to mind writing the whole thing. Follow our fundamental tips, however, and you’ll soon be firing them out one after the other:
- Be Interested
- Be Interesting
- Brainstorm
- Plan
- Reward Yourself

The last thing you want to do when writing an essay is pick a topic you despise. Sometimes you’re teacher will give you a topic, but most of the time you’ll have some form of choice. Use this flexibility to your advantage. Focus on something that you an interested in, something that gets you going, something that you care about. At least then you won’t totally despise writing it.
Remember, those reading your essay are humans, too. So don’t give them something dull and trite to read, give them something sassy, something with a little bit of edge, something different. Try to write something new, or at least stay away from the same boring topics everyone else does. There’s nothing worse for a reader than to go over fifty essays all about the same thing. Stand out from the crowd.
Before you start, try to think of as many different ideas as you can. Put them all down on paper. There’s no such thing as a bad idea in the brainstorming session. Get friends on board and talk it out. See what they come up with. Challenge yourself. Fight to think of as many different ideas as you can. Nothing is too weird or too wild.
Once you’ve brainstormed to your heart’s content, or your head’s capacity, narrow down your ideas. Your plan should focus on three main points of interest. Flesh out these three points and toss in an introduction and a conclusion. If you can’t write out your plan then you know you won’t be able to write out an entire essay. If you’re struggling with your plan, go back to your brainstorming ideas and come up with a new way of doing it. Similarly, when you’re writing your essay, keep a close eye on your plan so you don’t get sidetracked or give up.
A simple way to get an essay done is to give yourself little goals and rewards. For every few hundred words you write, treat yourself to a coffee or a walk or whatever. Just remember to keep coming back to it after!
